A new California law allows the public to view detailed information on registered sex offenders via the Internet. The Office of the Attorney General has created a sex offender locator site which allows the public to search for sex offender locations using various criteria. Knowing the whereabouts of sex offenders in our communities allows the public to better protect themselves and their children.

: Information released pursuant to Megan's Law is to inform the public when the release will enhance public safety and protection. It is illegal to use this information to commit a crime against a registered sex offender or to engage in illegal discrimination or harassment against a registered sex offender. A person is authorized to use this information only to protect a child at risk. Penalties for illegal use of information are listed inCalifornia Penal Code Section 290.4.
