Weeds are by far the most typical fire hazard in Merced County. Dense dried up vegetation (typically weeds) burns fast and hot and can pose a significant threat to nearby structures. Areas of dry weeds over more than 18 inches in height are subject to abatement, per Merced County Code Section 9.25.030.
Each year the Fire Department mails hundreds of notices to abate weeds to property owners, sometimes 2 or more notices regarding a single property. The Fire Department appreciates the effort of responsible property owners to abate their property in a timely manner.
