Criminal Division
General Felonies
The General Felony Division handles all felony prosecutions that are not assigned to specialized units, including, but not limited to, homicides, thefts, DUIs, drug possession, burglaries, robberies, and sexual assaults of adults. Our felony Deputy District Attorneys are dedicated to protecting the citizens of Merced County by seeking justice and the protection of crime victims.

General Misdemeanors
The General Misdemeanor Division handles all misdemeanor pretrials and jury trials. Misdemeanor offenses are crimes that are punishable by up to a year in county jail. The Merced County District Attorney’s Office is dedicated to ensuring that all crimes are appropriately punished.

Juvenile Crimes Unit
The Juvenile Crimes Unit seeks to help those juveniles who can be helped and to punish those juveniles who deserve punishment. Juvenile proceedings are conducted in Juvenile Court to adjudicate violations of criminal laws by minors. A minor is defined as an individual who is under 18 years of age.

Ag Crimes Grant
The mission of the Merced County Ag Crimes Unit is to enforce laws and to provide investigative services related primarily to the theft and property damage in the agriculture communities and rural industries. The Ag Crimes Unit will also provide current and up to date crime prevention techniques and strategies to the Farmers and Ranchers of Merced County.

Anti-Drug Unit
The Anti-Drug Unit is dedicated to the aggressive prosecution of major felony cases involving controlled substances, including clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, possession for sale, sales, and transportation. The Deputy District Attorney assigned to the unit also provides assistance to the Merced/Mariposa Narcotics Task Force. The efforts provide for increased sentences of felony drug offenders and for the seizure and forfeiture of assets determined to have resulted from drug transactions, eliminating their availability or criminal activity.

Anti-Gang Unit
The Anti-Gang Unit’s mission is to vigorously prosecute gang members who commit gang related crimes. The Deputy District Attorney assigned to the Unit works in unison with the Merced Multi-Agency Gang Task Force. The Unit is also involved with civilian community agencies and schools districts to promote gang awareness and prevention.

Los Banos Office
The primary objective of the Los Banos branch of the Merced County District Attorney’s Office is to prosecute all crimes occurring on the Westside of Merced County including, but not limited to, the communities of Los Banos, Gustine, and Dos Palos.

Sexual Assault Unit
The Sexual Assault Unit prosecutes felony crimes of sexual molestation against children. The Unit is comprised of an attorney and an investigator who specialize in child abuse prosecution. Cases are handled in a vertical prosecution format where one Deputy District Attorney is assigned the matter at the time law enforcement submits the case to the District Attorney’s Office for review, and handles the case at all court appearances and hearings.

Welfare Fraud
The Welfare Fraud Division of the District Attorney’s Office prosecutes those persons who commit fraud in order to receive AFDC and/or Food Stamps. The Division’s goals are to provide deterrence to the commission of fraud and to protect public monies.
