Captain Steve Sziraki was born in Biloxi, Mississippi. He settled in Merced County in 1974. He graduated from Atwater High School in 1981. He was hired as a Reserve Police Officer with The Atwater Police Department in 1990 and was hired full time in 1995.
In 1996 Captain Sziraki was hired by The Merced County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff and assigned to the Westside as a Patrol Deputy. During Captain Sziraki's time as a Deputy, he was a COPS Deputy, Law Enforcement Manager for Merced Jr. College, Field Training Officer, Detective, and was assigned to the Sheriff’s STAR Team
Captain Sziraki was promoted to Sergeant in 2005 and was assigned as a Patrol Sergeant on the Westside. He served as Acting Chief of Police for The Dos Palos Police Department for several months. He was assigned as the supervisor of the Sheriff’s Office STAR Team ( Sheriff Tactic and Reconnaissance Team), HIDTA Team (High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area), Court Services Supervisor, Reserve Coordinator, and Field Training Coordinator. Captain Sziraki returned to patrol until his promotion to Lieutenant in 2015. As a Lieutenant, he is was assigned as the Westside Los Banos Substation as the Area Commander.
In 2017 Sheriff Vern Warnke promoted Captain Sziraki to Captain of Sheriff's Operations and he oversees the everyday operation of the Patrol Bureau, Detectives Bureau, Coroner's Bureau, Sheriff's Dispatch, and the Animal Control Bureau.
